Bow Hunting?
« on: October 02, 2008, 02:15:16 PM »
Well? Huh? Huh?

Who's got what so far?

Put two little ones in the freezer over a week ago and haven't been back out. Lots of fresh steak!
Mmmmmm. The two buck tags for EAB areas don't hurt either.

Spending the next 3 days looking for antlers or a big doe.

Good Luck!

Slow going so far.  Not many seen.  I have had a suprisingly lucky (or cunning) yearling doe come in twice to within 10 yards and never present a decent shot.  I won't shoot at a deer directly facing me and she hasn't given me much else to shoot at.  I had a pretty gray fox under the tree on Sunday.

I have vacation from October 25 until November 9.  I plan on plenty of duck hunting and bow hunting during that time!

Been slow here also.  I passed up a shot on a doe because she had 3 little ones with her....really little ones.  Otherwise no shots presented.  We have a coyote problem on one farm and that is causing the deer to act very skiddish and goofy.  Every evening I have hunted for the last 2 weeks I have seen coyotes.  I am going to bring a rifle down and see if I can't make the deer feel more comfortable.

Took her last week, 15 yd shot from the ground.  Shot was a bit high although in the pic her skin is stretched a bit over the actual hole.  The exit was eight inches back on the other side--she only got 30 yds before she dropped.  At the register station I threw her on the scale guessing she was about 100, well the scale said 120--no wonder I was sore the next day after dragging her out of the woods.

I butchered her and she will now provide my family with meat for a few months.

Off to a good start I guess, hope to take two more to provide myself with meat for the year.

Been seeing lots of smaller antlerless deer.

Missed a big tom last night and lost an arrow.  Darn it! Beard was almost dragging the ground. Turkey with the bow has been on the list a long time.

Sailed right past him, he just startled a bit and walked over the crown of the ridge.
 :(

Ow well, few more weeks to go yet I suppose.

I don't bow hunt but I do fish for smallmouth and crappies in the fall. A little ways down from the house on the way to the river I planted a little seed this past spring. I see some grouse and turkeys and an occasional deer during the summer. But the last two weeks these guys started showing up. I thought I'd share a few photos. No they are not from a trail camera but from my little hand held Nikon pocket camera.  I guess they figure I'm walking by on the way to the river.

He's gonna go in the mid 140's to lower 150's from the quick rough score I did but I under estimated the last couple I rough scored by 6 inches and better.

The day has been spent, cutting, removing fat/sinew, and vaccum sealing.

 :P

They are moving and chasing does. Prime time has begun.
